They Called Her "Just A Maami In A Saree". She Proved She Was A Force Of Nature

Dr Jayshree Vencatesan's journey didn't begin in a lab — it began in childhood, in quiet moments spent with her father, who taught her to deeply respect the natural world. That early spark lit a lifelong passion for conservation that would eventually shape her into one of India's foremost wildlife scientists.

Vencatesan is the founder and Managing Trustee of Care Earth Trust, a Chennai-based non-governmental organisation dedicated to biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, and environmental education. Her work spans urban ecology, wetland conservation, and community engagement, with a particular focus on integrating traditional ecological knowledge with scientific approaches.

Despite facing dismissive attitudes — the condescending label "just a maami in a saree" reflects the gendered and ageist barriers she encountered in professional and institutional spaces — Vencatesan built a formidable body of work that has influenced conservation policy and practice across Tamil Nadu and beyond. Her persistence in the face of institutional scepticism has made her a role model for women in science and conservation.

Care Earth Trust has been involved in restoring degraded urban lakes, documenting biodiversity in urban green spaces, and advocating for the inclusion of ecological considerations in urban planning. In Chennai, where rapid urbanisation has destroyed significant portions of the city's wetland and green cover, this work directly addresses climate vulnerability by restoring the ecological infrastructure that buffers against flooding, heat, and water scarcity.

Vencatesan's approach emphasises that conservation is not separate from social and economic concerns. By working with local communities, schools, and government bodies, she has helped build the civic literacy and institutional capacity needed for sustained environmental stewardship. Her story illustrates how conservation leadership can emerge from unexpected places — and how expertise grounded in deep ecological knowledge and community relationships can achieve lasting impact.
